Roll-off dumpster rental in Hermantown

Approx. 11 road miles from the yard, around 18 minutes.

Hermantown is approx. 11 road miles west-northwest of the yard, around 18 minutes — same-day or next-day when availability allows; call early for the best chance of same-day. It is a city of 10,221 at the 2020 Census, in St. Louis County, inside the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (Resource Renew).

Single-family homes must use a licensed collector at least weekly (City Code § 900.08) — an open market; we found no City contract — and demolition debris has to go to a site designated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (§ 900.05). Remodels, roofs and clean-outs go out in roll-offs.

Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Hermantown

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Inside WLSSD — City code points garbage collectors to a Western Lake Superior Sanitary District licence (§ 900.11.1.1).
  • Obstruction permit — the City's 2026 fee schedule lists a temporary obstruction permit at $100, covering the parking lane, signs, sidewalk, driving lane and alley.
  • Winter parking — no parking on any City street from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., November 1 to April 15 (§ 830.09.1), and a 24-hour limit on street parking (§ 830.07).
  • Public Works — 4971 Lightning Drive, 218-729-3640.
  • Drop-off sites — we found no City brush or clean-up site; the Resource Renew sites in Duluth serve the District.

What comes out of Hermantown properties

Garage clean-outs and flooring in 15s, roofing in 10s and 20s, yard and storm clean-ups in 15s and 20s, remodels and landscaping in 20s, estate clean-outs in 30s, construction in 30s and 40s, and a 10 or 15 for concrete and dirt — heavy material usually only goes in the smaller boxes. Demolition debris goes to an MPCA-designated site under City code (§ 900.05), not out with the weekly trash. Minnesota keeps these out of the trash and out of landfills: tires (Minn. Stat. 115A.904); major appliances such as fridges, washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters and air conditioners (115A.9561); TVs and monitors with picture tubes (115A.9565); lead-acid car batteries (115A.915); motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and other vehicle fluids (115A.916); yard waste mixed with trash (115A.931); mercury items such as thermostats and fluorescent tubes (115A.932); and rechargeable batteries and devices with built-in rechargeables (115A.9157). Tell us if a load is yard waste, and before you load an appliance. No paint, solvents, oils, hazardous chemicals, gas cylinders, propane tanks, batteries, medical waste or asbestos. Inside the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, its banned list also keeps out electronic waste — TVs and monitors with screens 7 inches or larger, computers, printers and cell phones — plus asbestos, household hazardous waste and medical sharps. Paint, cleaners, pesticides and automotive fluids go free from Minnesota households to the Resource Renew Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 2626 Courtland St, Duluth.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Hermantown

Who may haul — the rule that matters: “No person shall engage in the business of collecting or removing garbage, rubbish, other mixed municipal solid waste and recyclable materials within the City without first obtaining a license to do so from the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District” (City Code § 900.11.1.1). The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, now called Resource Renew, says no one may collect or transport mixed municipal solid waste, rubbish or recyclable materials for profit within the District without a District licence (WLSSD Solid Waste Ordinance § 6.1), and its hauler application lists roll-off containers and construction/demolition waste among the services. We found no City franchise. We're licensed and insured.

In the street: “no person may obstruct or excavate in any right-of-way without first having obtained the appropriate permit from the City” (§ 310.7.1), and obstructing means placing any tangible object in a right-of-way so as to hinder free and open passage (§ 310.2.23). The City's 2026 fee schedule lists the temporary obstruction permit at $100. Ask Public Works, 4971 Lightning Drive, 218-729-3640.

Winter: no parking on any City street from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., November 1 to April 15 (§ 830.09.1). The rule is written for motor vehicles and we found no container rule, but the plows run in those hours — driveway first. Give us clear placement instructions and you don't need to be home; plywood or boards under the contact points protect a driveway.

State highways: MnDOT has no permit for setting a private container on trunk-highway right-of-way, and Minnesota law makes it a misdemeanor to obstruct a highway or place any object within its limits (Minn. Stat. 160.2715). Beside a state highway the container goes on private property, never in the right-of-way. We check the exact address.

Covered loads: Minnesota bars driving a load that can drop, sift, leak or blow out (Minn. Stat. 169.81, subd. 5). Keep debris level with the top rim — overfilled containers can't be legally transported.

Remodel or tear-down: Minnesota requires appliances, tires, mercury items, batteries, oils, electronics and household hazardous waste to be taken out before renovation or demolition starts (Minn. R. 7035.0805). Demolition debris means concrete, brick, asphalt, untreated wood, masonry, glass and similar building parts — never asbestos (Minn. R. 7035.0300, subp. 30). Asbestos work needs an MDH-licensed contractor, who notifies the Minnesota Department of Health at least 5 calendar days ahead (Minn. Stat. 326.74); a homeowner working in their own single-family home is exempt from the licence (326.72). For many demolitions — commercial buildings and larger residential buildings — the MPCA must be notified 10 working days ahead. Asbestos never goes in our containers; tell us if you find any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Hermantown

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the address, what you are clearing — a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard, a job site — roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

You get a flat-rate quote whenever possible that covers delivery, pickup, disposal, the standard rental period and an included weight allowance. If a smaller box does the job we will say so. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on a flat, solid surface rather than the lawn. Often same-day or next-day, when scheduling allows. You do not need to be home.

  4. Step 4: Load it at your pace

Keep it level with or below the top rim and keep the problem items out — paint and solvents, oil and fuel, chemicals, tires, batteries, propane tanks and gas cylinders, medical waste, asbestos, TVs and computers, and fridges, washers, stoves and other major appliances. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.

  5. Step 5: We haul it and dispose of it right

The load is secured for the road and goes to a facility permitted to take it, with metal, concrete and yard debris diverted from landfills whenever possible. You get your driveway back the way you left it.

Local answers

Dumpster rental in Hermantown — common questions

Is Hermantown same-day?

Same-day or next-day when availability allows — it is about 18 minutes from the yard. Call (218) 522-8487 early for the best chance.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Hermantown?

In a City street or right-of-way, yes: an obstruction permit from the City (City Code Sec. 310.7.1). The 2026 fee schedule lists the temporary obstruction permit at $100. A driveway is the simple spot.

Who licenses garbage haulers in Hermantown?

City code says garbage and rubbish collectors need a licence from the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (Sec. 900.11.1.1).

Can a dumpster sit in the street in winter?

Hermantown bans street parking from 2 to 10 a.m., November 1 to April 15 (Sec. 830.09.1). That rule covers vehicles, but plows run then, so the driveway is the safer spot.
