The 20 yard container in Duluth
When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is where we often end up — it is one of the most popular sizes in Duluth, and for many residential and light commercial projects around the Twin Ports it is the dependable all-purpose container. It handles a whole-home cleanout, a multi-room renovation, a roof, a large landscaping job or light demolition without being so tall that loading turns into a chore. It holds about six pickup truck loads, or roughly 110 to 130 standard 33-gallon bags.
It is about 22 feet long, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It is designed to fit many residential driveways and accessible job sites, and the 4.5-foot sides keep it easy to load by hand.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of branches and wires
Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts
Furniture, boxes and household junk from a whole house; drywall, wood, cabinets and flooring from a multi-room remodel; shingles and underlayment off a roof; branches, shrubs and yard debris from a big landscaping job, in their own load; framing, doors and windows from light demolition — these are 20 yard jobs. Tell us about the roof and we help estimate the weight before delivery.
Minnesota sorts the remodel part of that load by what it is. Under state rules, demolition debris means concrete, brick, bituminous concrete, untreated wood, masonry, glass, trees, rock and plastic building parts — and never asbestos (Minn. R. 7035.0300, subp. 30). Before a remodel or tear-down, appliances, tires, mercury items, batteries, oils and household hazardous waste have to come out first (Minn. R. 7035.0805). If your debris is mostly heavy material such as concrete or tile, a smaller dumpster for that part is usually more efficient than burying it under household junk.
What the 20 yard includes
Transparent flat-rate pricing with no hidden fees: delivery and pickup, disposal within the included three to four tons — about 6,000 to 8,000 pounds — the standard rental period and safe placement guidance. The price itself depends on the delivery location, the material type, the rental duration and any additional services such as swap-outs. Heavier materials can reach the weight limit before the dumpster looks full, so plan by weight as well as volume, distribute debris evenly, keep it below the top edge, and use a smaller box for heavy material when needed. Tell us when you book if you think you will go over, and we will help estimate it.
Suitability
Is the 20 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 20 yard for
- Whole-home cleanouts
- Multi-room renovations — drywall, wood, cabinets, flooring
- Roofing projects — shingles and underlayment
- Landscaping projects — branches, shrubs and yard debris, in their own load
- Light demolition — framing, doors, windows
Pick a different size for
- Mostly concrete, soil, brick or tile (use a 10, or a smaller box for the heavy part)
- Major construction and demolition — that is a 30 or 40
- Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus room for the truck
- Asbestos, paint, chemicals, fuel or oils, tires, batteries or major appliances
Placing a 20 yard container in Duluth or Superior
It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of branches and wires. The driveway comes first. In Duluth, a roll-off in a street, alley or sidewalk needs a City obstruction permit from Engineering — the City's permit page names roll-off boxes (City Code § 45-15) — applied for online through ePlace, with a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City on file before it is issued (§ 45-19), the permit card posted at the container, barricades and warning devices as the City Engineer requires (§§ 45-18, 45-22), and at least 5 business days' notice if the street will be closed to traffic. On private property, Duluth's zoning code names roll-off containers in its definition of temporary storage containers (UDC § 50-20.6.C) without saying how that applies to a short debris rental, so we check placement rules with you before delivery. In Superior, a container on a street, alley or right-of-way needs a permit from the Director of Public Works (Code §§ 106-4, 106-8), and a blocked sidewalk a City Clerk permit (§ 106-46). I-35, US-53, MN-61 and MN-194 are state trunk highways, where MnDOT has no permit for a private container, so there the box stays on the property. In winter, plan around snow emergencies and plowing. Other towns have their own rules — Hermantown, Proctor, Carlton and Moose Lake require a permit to obstruct a right-of-way, Rice Lake a permit or City Council approval, and Two Harbors' Excavation and Obstruction permit lists dumpsters by name. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the contact points add protection if you want it. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
About six, or roughly 110 to 130 standard trash bags. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.
Can a 20 yard fit in a Duluth driveway?
In many — it is about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, and the truck needs about 60 feet of clear space and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead to set it down. Put it on the driveway or a paved area rather than the lawn. If there is truly no room on the property, a Duluth street, alley or sidewalk placement needs the City's obstruction permit first: you apply online through the City's ePlace system, the City requires a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City, and if the street will be closed to traffic the application goes in at least 5 business days ahead. In winter, a driveway spot also keeps the box out of the way of snow emergencies and plowing. Driveway first.
What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?
Most 20 yard rentals include about three to four tons, depending on the material. Shingles, tile, concrete and dirt are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not.
How long is the rental?
The standard rental period is typically 3 to 7 days, and you can often extend for a daily or weekly fee if the job runs on. If it fills early, ask for a swap; if you finish early, call and we pick it up sooner.
Can I get a 20 yard the same day?
Often. Same-day or next-day delivery is available in many areas, depending on scheduling, and the 20 yard is one of the most popular sizes for same-day delivery. Call early — if you call before midday, we will do everything possible to deliver the same day. The phone is answered around the clock, but we do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.
