The 30 yard container in Duluth

The 30 yard takes up the same 22 by 7.5 feet of ground as the 20 — the extra volume is all height. That makes it the natural pick when a job makes a lot of bulky debris but the site has no more room: a multi-room renovation, an estate or property cleanout, an office or retail remodel with fixtures, shelving and partitions, light demolition, or a community cleanup. It suits many residential driveways and job sites, and it holds about nine pickup truck loads, or roughly 170 to 190 standard 33-gallon bags.

The sides are six feet high, so most of what goes in is carried or thrown rather than tipped from a wheelbarrow. Contractors with a crew do not mind; a homeowner working alone may prefer a 20 and a swap.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved lot or pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of branches and wires

Big renovations, cleanouts and commercial remodels

Taking several rooms back to the studs fills a 30 in a hurry: the cabinets, the doors, the drywall, framing and flooring. Estate and property cleanouts land here too — furniture, mattresses and household junk — and so do office and retail remodels and light tear-outs with doors, windows and structural debris. Sort a few things first. Minnesota bans major appliances — fridges, washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, AC units and dehumidifiers — from the trash and from landfills, and they must be recycled or reused (Minn. Stat. 115A.9561); CRT TVs and monitors are banned from the trash statewide (115A.9565); and in the Duluth area, Resource Renew also keeps TVs and monitors 7 inches or bigger, computers, printers and cell phones out. On a Superior job, Wisconsin bans major appliances and TVs, computers, monitors and printers from its landfills (Wis. Stat. 287.07). Tell us what is in the house and we will talk through where those go.

Knocking a building down takes paperwork before it takes a dumpster. Minnesota requires hazardous and problem materials, asbestos included, to come out before a structure is renovated or demolished. For many demolitions — commercial buildings and larger residential buildings — the MPCA must be notified at least 10 working days ahead, and asbestos removal is regulated by the Minnesota Department of Health: licensed contractors notify MDH at least 5 days before the job (Minn. Stat. 326.74), and a homeowner working in their own single-family home is exempt from licensing (326.72). Asbestos is never demolition debris under Minnesota rules, so it never goes in a roll-off. We will ask what the building is before we quote.

Weight, swaps and long jobs

About four to five tons — 8,000 to 10,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. Because the 30 holds a large volume, it is easy to reach the weight limit if heavy materials go in, so plan for both volume and weight, load evenly throughout the container, keep debris below the top edge, and separate heavy materials when possible. We can help estimate your load from your project details. Jobs that run for weeks usually go on a rotation: when the box is full we remove it or replace it with an empty one, and contractors get flexible scheduling and ongoing project support.

Suitability

Is the 30 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 30 yard for

  • Multi-room renovations
  • Estate and property cleanouts
  • Office and retail remodels — fixtures, shelving, partitions
  • Light demolition — doors, windows, structural debris
  • Community cleanups

Pick a different size for

  • Mostly concrete, brick, dirt or tile — a 10 or 15 manages the weight better
  • Heavy-only loads beyond safe haul limits
  • TVs, computers, monitors and printers — kept out of the trash in the Duluth area and in Wisconsin
  • Asbestos, paint, chemicals, tires, batteries or medical waste

Placing a 30 yard container in Duluth or Superior

It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway, paved lot or pad, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of branches and wires. The driveway comes first. In Duluth, a roll-off in a street, alley or sidewalk needs a City obstruction permit from Engineering — the City's permit page names roll-off boxes (City Code § 45-15) — applied for online through ePlace, with a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City on file before it is issued (§ 45-19), the permit card posted at the container, barricades and warning devices as the City Engineer requires (§§ 45-18, 45-22), and at least 5 business days' notice if the street will be closed to traffic. On private property, Duluth's zoning code names roll-off containers in its definition of temporary storage containers (UDC § 50-20.6.C) without saying how that applies to a short debris rental, so we check placement rules with you before delivery. In Superior, a container on a street, alley or right-of-way needs a permit from the Director of Public Works (Code §§ 106-4, 106-8), and a blocked sidewalk a City Clerk permit (§ 106-46). I-35, US-53, MN-61 and MN-194 are state trunk highways, where MnDOT has no permit for a private container, so there the box stays on the property. In winter, plan around snow emergencies and plowing. Other towns have their own rules — Hermantown, Proctor, Carlton and Moose Lake require a permit to obstruct a right-of-way, Rice Lake a permit or City Council approval, and Two Harbors' Excavation and Obstruction permit lists dumpsters by name. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the contact points add protection if you want it. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers

30 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Is a 30 yard too big for a house?

For a regular cleanout, often yes — a whole-home cleanout is usually a 20. For a remodel that strips several rooms, or a whole estate, no — that volume arrives faster than people expect. We will tell you honestly which it is.

Can I do swaps on a 30 yard?

Yes. Once the container is full we remove it and can replace it with an empty one, and contractors with ongoing work can set up flexible scheduling at the start.

How much weight is included in a 30 yard?

Typically about four to five tons, depending on the material. A 30 full of tile, dirt or concrete can go past that well before it reaches the top edge, so we estimate heavy loads with you during the quote.

Do I need a permit for a 30 yard?

In a street, yes, almost everywhere we go. In Duluth, a roll-off in a street, alley or sidewalk needs the City's obstruction permit, which requires a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City — a contractor's bond and insurance on file can cover it (§ 45-19). In Superior, a street or right-of-way placement needs a permit from the Director of Public Works, and blocking a sidewalk needs a City Clerk permit (§ 106-46). On your own driveway or lot, Duluth's zoning code does not say clearly how its storage-container rules apply to a debris rental, so we check placement rules with you before delivery. I-35, US-53, MN-61 and MN-194 are state trunk highways, and MnDOT has no permit for a private container on them, so there the box stays on private property. Each town page says what that town asks for.
