Residential Dumpster Rental across Duluth, Superior and the Northland
Homes around here vary enough that one container does not fit all of them. A hillside property in Congdon with a short, sloping driveway wants a 10 or a 15 and a driver who takes the approach slowly; a bigger lot in Lakeside, Hermantown or out toward Esko may have room for a 20. Most homeowners in Duluth find that a 15 or 20 yard offers the best balance between capacity and space. The first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like.
Most residential jobs are one of three things: a cleanout (a garage, an attic, a basement, or a whole house before a move or downsizing), a remodel (kitchen, bath, flooring, roof), or the yard — landscaping, a tree coming down, storm cleanup. Each wants a different size and a different talk about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers, the home cleanout guide covers the planning, and the phone call covers your job.

What actually fills a residential container
Home cleanouts lead the way: unwanted furniture, boxes, household junk, the contents of a garage, basement or attic. Kitchen and bath remodels are next — cabinets, countertops, tile, drywall, flooring. Then the outdoor jobs: shingles off a roof, scrap from a DIY project, an old deck or fence, branches, brush and soil from yard work or a garden upgrade, storm limbs.
The public options take some of it, not all. In the Duluth area, Resource Renew runs the regional drop-off sites: its Materials Recovery Center at 4587 Ridgeview Rd is self-service for residents and small commercial customers and takes mixed construction and demolition loads, but not household garbage, hazardous waste or yard waste, and its Yard Waste Compost Site on Courtland St is seasonal, roughly mid-April to the Saturday before Thanksgiving. In Superior, City trash pickup will not take items that do not fit in the cart, the spring clean-up excludes building materials, tires, TVs, appliances and mattresses, and the City landfill does not take demolition, remodeling or building materials. For a houseful, a remodel or a roof, that is what a residential roll-off is for.
Driveway placement, street rules and winter
In Duluth the driveway comes first. The street is another matter: putting a roll-off in a Duluth street, alley or sidewalk needs a City obstruction permit from Engineering, and the City's permit page lists "roll-off boxes" by name (City Code § 45-15). You apply online through the City's ePlace system; questions go to City Engineering at (218) 730-5200. The City requires a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City before it issues the permit — if your contractor already has a bond and insurance on file, you may not need your own (§ 45-19). The fee is a base fee plus a charge for the area and days used, with extra charges for parking meters and no-parking signs, so check the City's current fee schedule; starting before the permit is granted adds a penalty to the fee (§ 45-17). If the street will be closed to traffic, apply at least 5 business days ahead. The permit card has to be posted at the container, and the City can require barricades and warning devices (§§ 45-18, 45-22). On the driveway itself, Duluth's zoning code names roll-off containers in its definition of temporary storage containers (UDC § 50-20.6.C) but does not say how that applies to a short debris rental, so we check placement rules with you before delivery.
Superior has its own version. A container on a Superior street, alley or right-of-way needs a permit from the Director of Public Works (Code §§ 106-4, 106-8), and blocking a sidewalk needs a City Clerk permit — with Council approval if it runs over three days, and a certificate of insurance naming the City (§ 106-46). Winter changes the street question on both sides of the bridge. Duluth snow emergencies are declared by 4 p.m., take effect that evening and are never declared on a Sunday, and cars switch sides of the street (§§ 33-97.1, 33-97.5(c)); Superior's alternate-side parking runs all year, with the changeover every Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. (§ 112-51(g)), and nothing may stay parked on a snow-emergency route during a declared emergency (§ 112-54). A container on the driveway stays out of all of that. I-35, US-53, MN-61 and MN-194 are state trunk highways, and MnDOT has no permit for a private container on them, so there the box stays on the property. HOA rules can cover containers on your lot, so check yours before a longer rental. Each town page says what that town asks for.

Residential dumpster rental — the Minnesota and Wisconsin specifics
Minnesota keeps a long list out of the trash, and the Duluth area adds its own. State law bans these from the trash or a landfill: tires (Minn. Stat. 115A.904); major appliances such as fridges, washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, AC units and dehumidifiers (115A.9561); CRT TVs and monitors (115A.9565); car batteries (115A.915); motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and other vehicle fluids (115A.916); yard waste (115A.931); mercury items such as thermostats and fluorescent tubes (115A.932); and rechargeable batteries and devices with built-in rechargeables (115A.9157). In the Duluth area, Resource Renew's banned list also keeps out TVs and monitors 7 inches or bigger, computers, printers and cell phones, asbestos, household hazardous waste and medical sharps, and corrugated cardboard has to be separated from trash (WLSSD Ord. § 4.2.I). Across the bridge in Superior, Wisconsin's landfill bans cover lead-acid batteries, major appliances, waste oil and oil filters, yard waste, tires, TVs, computers and other electronics, cardboard and recyclable containers (Wis. Stat. 287.07). Where the leftovers go instead: paint, solvents, pesticides and cleaners go free to the Resource Renew Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2626 Courtland St in Duluth, which Superior residents can also use at no cost; leaves, grass and brush go to the Resource Renew Yard Waste Compost Site on Courtland St in season. The what can and cannot go in guide covers the rest.
Answers
Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered
Will the dumpster damage my driveway?
We take precautions during delivery and pickup. If you would like extra protection, placing plywood or boards under the contact points can help reduce surface wear — tell us before delivery if a newer or decorative driveway worries you.
Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?
In Duluth, only with the City's obstruction permit from Engineering — applied for online through ePlace, with a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City, and at least 5 business days ahead if the street will be closed to traffic. In Superior, only with a permit from the Director of Public Works. On a state trunk highway such as I-35, US-53, MN-61 or MN-194 there is no MnDOT permit for a private container at all. The driveway is always simpler.
Does my HOA have a say?
On the driveway, often yes. HOA rules can cover containers on your lot, and we do not know your HOA's rules — check them before you book, especially for a longer rental.
Can I put old appliances in the dumpster?
Not the big ones. In Minnesota, major appliances — fridges, washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, AC units and dehumidifiers — may not go in the trash or a landfill and must be recycled or reused (Minn. Stat. 115A.9561), and Wisconsin bans them from landfills too (Wis. Stat. 287.07). Our junk removal crew can take appliances with proper preparation and send them for recycling. Small appliances are usually fine — tell us about any appliance when you book.
How long can I keep the container?
The standard rental period is typically 3 to 7 days, and we offer flexible options: call and we can often extend it for a daily or weekly fee, depending on availability. If you finish early, call and we pick it up sooner. If you expect to need the box for several weeks, tell us when you book and we check the placement rules for your address with you first.
Do you serve outside Duluth?
Yes — fifteen more towns: Superior, Hermantown, Proctor and Rice Lake next door; Esko, Scanlon, Cloquet, Carlton, Wrenshall, Barnum, Moose Lake and Cromwell in Carlton County; and Floodwood, Two Harbors and Silver Bay further out. Each has its own page, and each says plainly what that town requires for a container and who may haul. We are licensed and insured.
