The 10 yard container in Duluth
The 10 yard is the one we send when the job is one room, one garage or one weekend. At about 14 feet long it is the shortest container we run, so it suits tight spots — a short driveway on a hillside lot, a pad beside the garage, a corner of a job site. The trade-off is volume: it holds about three pickup truck loads, or roughly 50 to 70 standard 33-gallon trash bags, and cabinets and drywall fill it fast.
Where the 10 yard earns its keep is weight. Concrete, brick, asphalt, rock and dirt reach the limit long before a bigger box looks full, and the 10 includes about one to two tons. That is why heavy material is usually limited to the smaller containers — a 10 or a 15 — because of weight restrictions and transport safety. The 10 works best when the debris is dense and heavy rather than bulky. Tell us what is going in and we will help you plan a load that stays inside the allowance.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of branches and wires
Small remodels, single-room cleanouts and the heavy stuff
A bathroom tear-out — tile, tub, vanity, a bit of drywall — sits comfortably in a 10 yard. So does a garage or single-room cleanout, a small kitchen job, a roofing tear-off on a smaller house or garage, or a patch of concrete, brick, tile or asphalt coming up.
It suits the Twin Ports because the public drop-off options stop short of a real tear-out. Resource Renew's Materials Recovery Center at 4587 Ridgeview Rd in Duluth is self-service, for residents and small commercial customers, and takes mixed construction and demolition loads — fine for a trailer or two, slow going for a bathroom's worth of tile and plaster. Across the bridge, the City of Superior's landfill on Moccasin Mike Rd does not take demolition, remodeling or building materials at all. And before any remodel or tear-down, Minnesota requires appliances, tires, mercury items, batteries, oils and household hazardous waste to be removed first (Minn. R. 7035.0805). A 10 yard on the driveway takes what is left.
The weight line on a 10 yard
About one to two tons — 2,000 to 4,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. Household junk never gets close. A 10 filled to the rim with concrete, dirt or shingles can, so spread it evenly, keep it level with or below the top rim, and tell us it is coming. If the debris goes over the included allowance, we weigh the load and apply a clear overage fee — explained before delivery, so it is not a surprise. Every load leaves secured: Minnesota law bars driving any load that can drop, sift, leak or blow off the truck (Minn. Stat. 169.81, subd. 5), and Wisconsin says the same for the Superior side (Wis. Stat. 348.10(2)).
Suitability
Is the 10 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 10 yard for
- Bathroom or small kitchen remodel
- Garage or single-room cleanout
- Roofing tear-off on a smaller house or garage
- Concrete, brick, asphalt, rock and tile within the weight limit
- Short driveways and tight placement spots
Pick a different size for
- A whole-home cleanout — that is a 20 or a 30
- Bulky furniture from several rooms
- Paint, fuel, oil, hazardous liquids, tires, batteries, asbestos or pressurized tanks
- Fridges, washers, stoves, water heaters and other major appliances — Minnesota requires them recycled
Placing a 10 yard container in Duluth or Superior
It needs a flat, solid spot about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of branches and wires. The driveway comes first. In Duluth, a roll-off in a street, alley or sidewalk needs a City obstruction permit from Engineering — the City's permit page names roll-off boxes (City Code § 45-15) — applied for online through ePlace, with a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City on file before it is issued (§ 45-19), the permit card posted at the container, barricades and warning devices as the City Engineer requires (§§ 45-18, 45-22), and at least 5 business days' notice if the street will be closed to traffic. On private property, Duluth's zoning code names roll-off containers in its definition of temporary storage containers (UDC § 50-20.6.C) without saying how that applies to a short debris rental, so we check placement rules with you before delivery. In Superior, a container on a street, alley or right-of-way needs a permit from the Director of Public Works (Code §§ 106-4, 106-8), and a blocked sidewalk a City Clerk permit (§ 106-46). I-35, US-53, MN-61 and MN-194 are state trunk highways, where MnDOT has no permit for a private container, so there the box stays on the property. In winter, plan around snow emergencies and plowing. Other towns have their own rules — Hermantown, Proctor, Carlton and Moose Lake require a permit to obstruct a right-of-way, Rice Lake a permit or City Council approval, and Two Harbors' Excavation and Obstruction permit lists dumpsters by name. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the contact points add protection if you want it. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
10 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How much space does a 10 yard dumpster need?
The container is about 14 feet long and 7.5 feet wide. Pick a flat, solid spot such as a driveway or paved area, allow about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and check for at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, with no branches or wires in the way. Move cars, bins and equipment out of the way, and if you will not be home, mark the spot. Keep it on your own property if you can: in Duluth, a roll-off in a street, alley or sidewalk needs a City obstruction permit from Engineering, and we check placement rules with you before delivery.
Can I put concrete in a 10 yard dumpster?
Yes — it is one of the main reasons people rent one. Heavy materials such as concrete, brick, asphalt and dirt are usually limited to the smaller containers, a 10 or 15, because of weight restrictions and transport safety. Spread it evenly, keep it level with or below the top rim, and tell us roughly how much there is. Under Minnesota rules, concrete, brick, asphalt, untreated wood, masonry and rock are demolition debris (Minn. R. 7035.0300, subp. 30), so a clean load of it is simpler to handle than one mixed with household junk.
How long do I get it for?
The standard rental period is typically 3 to 7 days. Need more time? Call and we can often extend it for a daily or weekly fee, depending on availability. If it fills before the job is done, we can swap it. Finished early? Call and we will schedule an earlier pickup.
How much does a 10 yard dumpster cost?
It is our smallest container, and we quote every job on its own rather than publishing per-size prices. Dumpster rental around Duluth often ranges from about $350 to $750, depending on the size, the type of debris, the delivery location and how long you keep it, with flat-rate pricing whenever possible that includes delivery, pickup and disposal, and no hidden fees. Call (218) 522-8487 for an exact price for your address. If the job grows, we can swap it for a bigger box.
