The 15 yard container in Duluth
The 15 yard is the step up from the 10 when the job is one big room rather than one small one. Kitchen and bathroom remodels are the classic fit — cabinets, countertops, vanities, tile and the drywall behind them — and so is a carpet, tile or laminate change-out, a garage, attic or basement cleanout, a multi-room cleanout before a move, a small deck or fence coming down, or a yard full of branches and shrubs. It holds about four to five pickup truck loads, or roughly 80 to 100 standard 33-gallon bags.
At about 16 feet long it gives you more capacity than a 10 without the footprint of a 20, and it fits on many driveways in Duluth, Superior and the towns around them. The 4.5-foot sides keep loading easy. If you are between a 10 and a 20 and the debris is light and bulky, this is usually where you land.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of branches and wires
Kitchens, floors, decks and yards
A kitchen makes more debris than people expect: by the time the cabinets, the countertops and the drywall are out, a 10 is tight and a 15 is right. Flooring jobs are the same — carpet, tile and laminate — and tile is heavy, so watch the weight. Roofing jobs fit too: tell us the size of the roof and we will help estimate the weight before you book. Break long deck and fence boards and posts down so they load flat.
Backyard jobs fit as well — branches, shrubs and green waste from a seasonal cleanup. Keep the green waste apart from household trash: outside the Twin Cities metro area, Minnesota law bars putting yard waste in mixed trash or a disposal facility (Minn. Stat. 115A.931), and Wisconsin bans yard waste, including brush under six inches across, from its landfills (Wis. Stat. 287.07(2)). A clean green load has somewhere to go; a mixed one does not. If most of the load is dense material such as tile or concrete, a 10 yard may manage the weight better.
Weight on a 15 yard
About two to three tons — 4,000 to 6,000 pounds — is included, depending on the material. Flooring, tile, roofing and wet yard waste get heavy quickly, so plan for both volume and weight: our team can help estimate the weight from your project details before delivery, so you avoid extra charges. Distribute materials evenly inside the container, keep everything below the top edge for safe transport, and cabinets, drywall and carpet will never get near the line. If the load does go over, we weigh it and apply a clear overage fee.
Suitability
Is the 15 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 15 yard for
- Kitchen or bath remodel including cabinets and countertops
- Garage, attic, basement and multi-room cleanouts
- Flooring and carpet removal
- Roofing jobs, with a weight estimate first
- Yard cleanup, small deck and fence removal
Pick a different size for
- Whole-home renovation — go to the 20 or 30
- Loads that are mostly tile, concrete or dirt (weight — a 10 may be better)
- Yard waste mixed into household trash
- Paint, liquids, chemicals, fuels, tires, batteries, asbestos or other hazardous materials
Placing a 15 yard container in Duluth or Superior
It needs a flat, solid spot about 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), about 60 feet of clear space for the roll-off truck, and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead, free of branches and wires. The driveway comes first. In Duluth, a roll-off in a street, alley or sidewalk needs a City obstruction permit from Engineering — the City's permit page names roll-off boxes (City Code § 45-15) — applied for online through ePlace, with a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City on file before it is issued (§ 45-19), the permit card posted at the container, barricades and warning devices as the City Engineer requires (§§ 45-18, 45-22), and at least 5 business days' notice if the street will be closed to traffic. On private property, Duluth's zoning code names roll-off containers in its definition of temporary storage containers (UDC § 50-20.6.C) without saying how that applies to a short debris rental, so we check placement rules with you before delivery. In Superior, a container on a street, alley or right-of-way needs a permit from the Director of Public Works (Code §§ 106-4, 106-8), and a blocked sidewalk a City Clerk permit (§ 106-46). I-35, US-53, MN-61 and MN-194 are state trunk highways, where MnDOT has no permit for a private container, so there the box stays on the property. In winter, plan around snow emergencies and plowing. Other towns have their own rules — Hermantown, Proctor, Carlton and Moose Lake require a permit to obstruct a right-of-way, Rice Lake a permit or City Council approval, and Two Harbors' Excavation and Obstruction permit lists dumpsters by name. Check your HOA too. Plywood or boards under the contact points add protection if you want it. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
15 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How big is a 15 yard dumpster?
About 16 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 4.5 feet high. It holds around four to five pickup truck loads, or roughly 80 to 100 standard trash bags.
Will it fit in my driveway?
Most likely — at about 16 feet it fits on many driveways, and the driveway is where it should go. The truck needs about 60 feet of clear space, a flat, stable surface and at least 25 feet of clearance overhead. The street is the fallback, not the plan. In Duluth, a roll-off in a street, alley or sidewalk needs a City obstruction permit from Engineering (City Code § 45-15); the City requires a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City before it issues one (§ 45-19), and the permit card has to be posted at the container (§ 45-18). In Superior, a container in a street or right-of-way needs a permit from the Director of Public Works (Code §§ 106-4, 106-8). Duluth's zoning code also mentions roll-off containers in its rules for temporary storage containers (UDC § 50-20.6.C) without saying how that applies to a short debris rental, so we check placement rules with you before delivery. If you have an HOA, check its rules too.
Can I keep it longer than the standard period?
Yes. The standard rental period is typically 3 to 7 days, and we can often extend it for a daily or weekly fee, depending on availability — just call.
What is the weight limit?
Most 15 yard rentals include about two to three tons, depending on the material. Tile, shingles, concrete and dirt can reach that quickly, so tell us what it is and we will help estimate it.
Can I mix different materials?
Usually yes, as long as nothing on the not-accepted list goes in. Keep yard waste in its own load, and keep major appliances, electronics and anything hazardous out. If a lot of the load is heavy, tell us and we may recommend a smaller box for that part.
