Where we deliver around Duluth and Superior

We run roll-off containers out of 405 John Ave — inside the City of Superior, Douglas County, a few minutes from the Blatnik Bridge (I-535/US-53) and the Bong Bridge (US-2) into Duluth — to every town below. Distance is the first thing that changes. Approximate road miles from the yard: central Superior about 1, central Duluth about 5, Proctor about 9, Hermantown about 11, Rice Lake about 13, Esko about 17, Scanlon about 20, Carlton about 22, Cloquet and Wrenshall about 23, Two Harbors about 32, Barnum about 38, Cromwell about 43, Moose Lake about 44, Floodwood about 48 and Silver Bay about 60. Same-day or next-day is available when scheduling allows, and route timing decides the rest.

The second thing that changes is the rules. Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor, Rice Lake, Cloquet, Carlton, Scanlon, Wrenshall and Thomson Township, which includes Esko, sit inside the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District — Resource Renew — where hauling trash, rubbish or recyclables for profit takes a District licence (WLSSD Ord. § 6.1) whose application lists roll-off containers and construction and demolition waste. Duluth adds a City Garbage Collector License (City Code Ch. 24), and a street, alley or sidewalk placement there needs the City Engineering obstruction permit, with a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance on file (§§ 45-15, 45-19). In Superior we found no City hauler licence, and a street placement needs a Director of Public Works permit (§§ 106-4, 106-8). Wrenshall's and Barnum's codes require a City Council license or a city contract to haul refuse for hire, Silver Bay runs residential garbage through a municipal contract whose posted rates include dumpster rental, and Cloquet issues its own collector's licence, so in those four we check the City's rules before booking. Outside the district, Carlton County licenses collectors in Moose Lake, Barnum and Cromwell (Ord. 17), St. Louis County licenses haulers in Floodwood (Ord. 45), and we found no Lake County hauler ordinance for Two Harbors and Silver Bay. We are licensed & insured. Each town page quotes the section and gives the office to call. We would rather say it here than find out on delivery day.

The service area

Every town we cover, grouped by area

The run splits three ways: Duluth, Superior and the towns next door — Hermantown, Proctor and Rice Lake; Carlton County, from Esko, Scanlon and Cloquet to Moose Lake and Cromwell; and further out, Floodwood and the North Shore towns of Two Harbors and Silver Bay.

Duluth, Superior & next door

Duluth just over the bridges, Superior where the yard is, plus Hermantown, Proctor and Rice Lake — roughly 1 to 13 road miles out (approx.). Duluth needs a City Obstruction Permit for any roll-off in a street, alley or sidewalk (City Code § 45-15), Superior needs a Director of Public Works permit for its streets (§ 106-8), and the Minnesota cities here are all inside WLSSD (Resource Renew), which licenses haulers (Ord. § 6.1). Winter parking rules make the driveway the safe spot. Same-day or next-day when availability allows; call early for the best chance of same-day.

Carlton County

Esko (Thomson Township), Scanlon, Cloquet, Carlton and Wrenshall inside WLSSD, and Barnum, Moose Lake and Cromwell outside it, where Carlton County Ordinance 17 licenses collectors — roughly 17 to 44 road miles from the yard (approx.). Cloquet adds its own city collector licence, and Wrenshall's and Barnum's codes require a City Council licence or a city contract to haul refuse for hire, so we check the City's rules before booking there. Same-day or next-day is available in many service areas depending on schedule availability; call early.

North Shore & Floodwood

Floodwood in St. Louis County's solid waste area, and Two Harbors and Silver Bay up the North Shore in Lake County — roughly 32 to 60 road miles from the yard (approx.). None is in WLSSD. Two Harbors' right-of-way permit form lists dumpsters by name, and Silver Bay runs residential garbage through a municipal contract that includes dumpster rental, so we check the City's rules before booking there. Same-day or next-day is available in many service areas depending on schedule availability; call early.

Answers

Service area questions

Which towns are same-day?

Many of them, depending on where the trucks are and when you call — before midday gives you the best chance. The closest runs from the yard are central Superior, about 1 road mile, central Duluth, about 5, and Proctor, about 9; the furthest are Moose Lake, about 44, Floodwood, about 48, and Silver Bay, about 60.

Do you serve places without their own page?

Yes, call — the townships and rural roads between our towns are inside our run; they just do not have their own pages. Tell us the address and we will tell you which rules apply. The rules follow the city or township the property is in, and the state it is in, not the mailing address.

Why do town pages mention hauler licences and contracts?

Because the Northland licenses haulers in layers. Inside the WLSSD district a District licence applies, Duluth and Cloquet add their own, Wrenshall and Barnum require a City Council license or a city contract, Carlton and St. Louis counties license haulers outside the district, and Silver Bay runs residential garbage through a municipal contract. We state what each town says.

Is the price different by town?

The flat rate depends partly on the delivery location, so the furthest towns can cost a little more — we say so up front.

Where do the loads go?

To a facility permitted to take that kind of waste. Duluth and its neighbors are in the Resource Renew district, which regulates garbage and recycling there, and debris from a Duluth wrecking permit has to go to a site approved by the MPCA and WLSSD. Recyclable material goes to recycling facilities whenever they accept it.
