What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Duluth, MN Guide
The 20 yard is one of our most popular sizes. How to choose between 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yards by volume, weight and driveway space around Duluth.

Whether you are clearing out a family home, tackling years of garage clutter or getting a property ready to sell, a full cleanout feels overwhelming before you start. The secret is a plan and a place to put everything: a roll-off in the driveway.

Dragging a cleanout to the curb a few bags at a time, or making trip after trip to a disposal site, drains your weekends. In Duluth we found no City bulky-item pickup; a single bulky item goes through your licensed hauler by advance arrangement and at your cost (§ 24-2). In Superior, the City carts take what fits, and the annual spring clean-up leaves out building materials, tires, TVs, appliances and mattresses. Resource Renew's Materials Recovery Center takes self-hauled loads by the cubic yard, and Carlton's spring and fall Clean Up Days are for residents' yard waste. A roll-off in the driveway changes the rhythm: you work continuously, toss as you go, and we haul it away in one pickup.
For a garage or single-room cleanout, a 10 is often enough; a 15 yard handles garage, attic and basement cleanouts and multi-room cleanouts, and is great for moving or downsizing. A whole-home cleanout is usually a 20 yard, which handles bulky items and volume, or a 30 yard for estate or property cleanouts with a lot of furniture, mattresses and household junk. Large commercial or warehouse cleanouts can call for a 40. Furniture is bulky and light, so volume usually decides a cleanout before weight does. The sizing guide has the full table.
Walk the house first and list the spaces you are tackling. Then run every item through four piles, keep, donate, drop-off and toss, before anything goes in the bin. The drop-off pile is the Minnesota one: TVs and computers, large appliances, tires, car and rechargeable batteries, paint and fluorescent tubes cannot go in the box, and yard waste goes as its own load. Having the container on site makes the toss decision fast, because there is no pile of maybe items building up in the yard. Finish one space before moving to the next, starting with the one that bothers you most, often the garage.
Most rentals include a standard rental period of up to 7 days, which covers most single-house cleanouts, and your quote confirms the days. Need longer? We can often extend your rental for a reasonable daily or weekly fee, or swap a full box for an empty one. Finish early and we can schedule pickup sooner. You do not need to be home for delivery or pickup, as long as we know where to place the dumpster and the area is clear, which helps when you are clearing a family member's home from out of town.
Plan around the season too. From November to April many towns ban overnight street parking for vehicles, Rice Lake bans street parking all day and counts trailers as vehicles (Ord. #50), and Duluth and Superior run alternate-side parking, so the box belongs on the driveway. The Resource Renew Yard Waste Compost Site is open typically from the third week of April to the Saturday before Thanksgiving, so a fall cleanout with a lot of brush is easier in a yard waste box.
Most household cleanout material is fine for a roll-off: furniture of every kind, mattresses, boxes and general junk, old flooring and carpet, cabinets, small appliances, cardboard kept flat and together, and yard waste as its own load. Minnesota does not ban mattresses or clothing from the trash. Load smart: break down bulky items, spread the weight evenly rather than piling it at one end, fill the gaps with smaller pieces, and keep the load level with the top rim so it can be safely transported. If the cleanout turns into a remodel, with cabinets coming off the walls or flooring coming up, tell us, because household junk and demolition debris are different loads.
A few things turn up in every cleanout that cannot go in the box. TVs and monitors with a cathode-ray tube are banned from mixed trash statewide (Minn. Stat. 115A.9565), and in the Duluth area the District bans screens 7 inches or larger, computers and cell phones too; our junk removal service sends electronics to recycling whenever possible, and City of Superior residents can use the City's free e-waste receptacle. Fridges, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters and AC units are major appliances that may not go in mixed trash (115A.9561); Resource Renew's Materials Recovery Center takes them for a per-item fee, and our junk removal service takes appliances with proper preparation. Tires (115A.904) and car batteries (115A.915) are banned too; the Materials Recovery Center takes four tires a day free. Paint, cleaners, pesticides, household batteries, fluorescent bulbs and old motor oil go free to the Resource Renew Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2626 Courtland St, for Minnesota households and City of Superior residents. Usable furniture and household items can be donated, and our junk removal team recycles and donates whenever possible. The what-goes-in guide has the full list.
The driveway is the spot. A flat, stable surface works best, and plywood or boards under the contact points help protect it. Duluth's zoning code names roll-off containers in its storage-container definition (UDC § 50-20.6.C), and how that applies to a debris box on a driveway is not spelled out, so we check placement rules with you before delivery. If your home is in an HOA, its rules can limit how long a dumpster stays visible or where it sits, so check before delivery day and let us know about any tight access, steep drive or hillside lot.
The street is a different matter. In Duluth it takes a City Obstruction Permit from Engineering (§ 45-15), with a $10,000 surety bond and liability insurance naming the City (§ 45-19) and the permit card posted at the box. In Superior it takes a Director of Public Works permit (§ 106-8). On state routes such as I-35, US-53 and MN-61, MnDOT has no permit for a container. A few towns have their own collection rules for homes: in Wrenshall and Barnum, hauling refuse for hire takes a city licence or contract (§§ 50.07(A), 50.13(B)), Silver Bay runs a municipal garbage contract that offers dumpster rental, and Cloquet issues its own collector's licence, so in those four we check the City's rules before booking. The permit guide has every town we list.
Our dumpsters are driveway-friendly. Give us a flat, stable spot with about 60 feet of space for the truck and about 25 feet of overhead clearance, move cars out of the way, and mark the placement spot clearly if you will not be there. Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime; in Duluth, no collections are made in a residential district before 7 a.m. on Saturday or 6 a.m. on other days (§ 24-20(a)). If you would rather not lift a thing, ask about our junk removal service, where our team loads, hauls and disposes of everything and recycles and donates whenever possible. Call (218) 522-8487 — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — and ask about same-day delivery if the cleanout is already under way: in many parts of Duluth, Superior, Hermantown and nearby areas we offer same-day or next-day delivery depending on scheduling availability.

For a whole-home cleanout, a 20 yard is the usual fit, or a 30 for an estate or property cleanout with a lot of furniture. A garage or attic usually needs a 10 or 15. Tell us what the home looks like and we will recommend the right size.
Yes. Furniture, mattresses and household junk can all go in a roll-off; Minnesota does not ban mattresses from the trash. Keep TVs, computers, large appliances, tires and batteries out.
Set them aside. Minnesota bans major appliances and CRT TVs from mixed trash, and in the Duluth area the District bans other screens and computers too. The Resource Renew Materials Recovery Center takes appliances for a fee, and our junk removal service takes appliances with proper preparation.
